Frequently Asked Questions
Are the fobs numbered sequentially? No, the numbers are not sequential.
Can the fobs or cards be printed on?
- Fobs: Cannot be printed on due to their small size.
- Thick Cards (1.8mm): Difficult to print on because of their textured finish.
- Thin Cards (0.8mm): Can be printed on.
What do the numbers printed on the fobs and cards mean? Each fob or card contains an EM chip pre-programmed with a unique hexadecimal number. This corresponds to an 18-digit number, which is split into two parts:
- Unique ID (UID): A 10-digit number. This is the number printed on the fob.
- Wiegand Code: An 8-digit number. This is not printed on the fobs, but both the 10-digit and 8-digit numbers are printed on the proximity access cards.
Why are these numbers important? The number your system uses depends on your specific card reader and software:
- Some readers only use the 10-digit UID, while others only use the 8-digit Wiegand number.
- Certain systems that require a remote for deleting lost fobs may only accept the 8-digit Wiegand number for manual entry.
- Many PC-based access control systems, like our AC8001 or AC8002, will only display and accept the 8-digit Wiegand number.
How can I find the 8-digit Wiegand number? The easiest method is to use our Proximity USB Desktop Card Reader. Simply plug it into your computer, open a text editor like Notepad, and present the fob or card. The 8-digit Wiegand number will be displayed automatically.
Do I need a Proximity USB Desktop Card Reader? A desktop reader is not required for our standalone key fob readers. However, it is necessary if you are using key fobs with our PC access control systems (AC8001/AC8002) and is highly recommended if you need to program several hundred fobs, as it will significantly speed up the process.
Which device works best with these fobs? They work perfectly with any of our compatible card readers or keypad/card reader combination units, as well as any third-party device that supports the Proximity Wiegand 125kHz 26-bit EM-RFID format.
