Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: Are the fobs or cards numbered sequentially? A: No, the numbers are unique to each fob but are not assigned in a sequential order.
Q: Can I print on the fobs or cards? A: Printing is not possible on the small surface of the fobs. While thin 0.8mm cards can be printed on, the textured finish of our thick 1.8mm proximity cards may make printing difficult.
Q: What do the numbers printed on the fobs and cards mean? A: Each fob or card contains an EM chip pre-programmed with a unique hexadecimal number. This corresponds to an 18-digit number that breaks down into two key components:
- A 10-digit Unique ID (U.I.D.), which is printed on the fob.
- An 8-digit Wiegand code number, which is not printed on the fob (but both numbers are printed on our proximity cards).
Q: Why are these numbers important? A: Different access control systems use these numbers in different ways. For example:
- Some readers only use the 10-digit U.I.D.
- Others, including many PC-based systems like our AC8001 and AC8002, will only recognize and display the 8-digit Wiegand number.
- Some systems may require the 8-digit Wiegand number for manual entry when deleting a lost fob. The number your system requires depends entirely on its specific configuration.
Q: How can I find the 8-digit Wiegand number if it's not printed on my fob? A: The easiest method is to use our Proximity USB Desktop Card Reader. Simply plug it into your computer, open a text editor like Notepad, and present the fob to the reader. The 8-digit Wiegand number will be displayed instantly.
Q: Do I need a Proximity USB Desktop Card Reader to use your fobs? A: No, you do not need one for standard operation with our readers. However, a desktop reader is highly recommended if you are:
- Using key fobs with our PC-based access control systems (AC8001 or AC8002).
- Needing to program a large number of fobs, as it will significantly speed up the process.
