Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can these cards be printed on? No. Due to their 1.8mm thickness and textured finish, these cards are not suitable for printing.
Are the cards numbered sequentially? No, the numbers on the cards are unique but not sequential.
What do the numbers printed on the cards mean? Each card contains an EM chip pre-programmed with a unique hexadecimal number. This is converted into two important codes:
- Unique I.D. (UID) Number (10 digits): A unique identifier for the card.
- Wiegand Code (8 digits): The code used by many access control systems.
Both numbers are printed on these proximity cards for easy reference.
Why are these numbers important? Different access control systems use the numbers in different ways:
- Some readers use the 10-digit UID.
- Many PC-based systems (like our AC8001/AC8002) only recognize the 8-digit Wiegand code.
- Some systems require the 8-digit Wiegand code for manually deleting lost or stolen cards.
It is crucial to know which number your specific system requires for programming and management.
How can I easily find the 8-digit Wiegand number? The simplest method is to use our Proximity USB Desktop Reader. Just plug it into your computer, open a text editor like Notepad, and present the card or fob. The 8-digit Wiegand number will be instantly displayed.
Do I need a desktop reader to use your fobs or cards? Not necessarily. You would only require a desktop reader if you need to:
- Enroll fobs or cards into a PC-based access control system (like our AC8001 or AC8002).
- Quickly enroll a large number of cards or fobs, as it significantly speeds up the process.
