Frequently Asked Questions
Can these cards be printed on? Yes, these cards are designed to be printable.
Are the cards numbered sequentially? No, the numbers on the cards are not sequential.
What do the numbers printed on the cards mean? Each card's internal EM chip is pre-programmed with a hexadecimal number that corresponds to an 18-digit number. This is broken down as follows:
- 10-digit Unique ID (UID): This is the primary identification number and is printed on the card.
- 8-digit Wiegand code: This number is also printed on the card but is not present on key fobs.
Why are these numbers important? The number your access control system reads depends on its specific configuration:
- Some 26-bit Wiegand readers will only read the 10-digit UID in binary format.
- Others will only read the 8-digit Wiegand number.
- Many PC-based access control systems, like our AC8001 and AC8002 models, will only display and accept the 8-digit Wiegand number.
- For systems that require manual entry to delete lost fobs or cards, you might need the 8-digit Wiegand number instead of the 10-digit UID.
Ultimately, the required format is determined by your specific system.
How can I find the 8-digit Wiegand number? The easiest method is to use our Proximity USB desktop card reader. This is a simple plug-and-play device. Just connect it to your computer, open a text editor like Notepad, and present the card. The 8-digit Wiegand number will be displayed.
Do I need a USB desktop reader for your key fob readers? No, you only need one if you are using key fobs with our PC access control systems (AC8001 or AC8002), or if you need to program a large number of cards/fobs and want to speed up the process.
Which devices do these cards work best with? They work perfectly with any of our products or any other device that supports the Proximity Wiegand 125kHz 26-bit EM-RFID format. Always confirm the required format with your current supplier first.
