Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: Are the fobs or cards numbered sequentially? A: No, they are not.
Q: Can the fobs or cards be printed on? A: Fobs are too small for printing. The thick 1.8mm cards have a textured finish that can make printing difficult. However, the thin 0.8mm cards can be printed on.
Q: What are the numbers printed on the fobs and cards? A: Each fob or card contains an EM chip pre-programmed with a unique hexadecimal number. This is represented by two printed numbers: the 10-digit U.I.D. number and the 8-digit Wiegand code. Our fobs have the Wiegand code printed, while our proximity cards have both numbers.
Q: Are these numbers important? A: Yes. The number your system uses depends on its configuration:
- Some Wiegand readers only read the 10-digit U.I.D. number.
- Others only read the 8-digit Wiegand number.
- Many PC-based access control systems, like our AC8001 and AC8002, will only display and accept the 8-digit Wiegand number.
- Some systems that require a remote for deleting lost fobs may only accept the manual entry of the 8-digit Wiegand number.
Q: How can I find the 8-digit Wiegand number? A: The easiest method is to use our Proximity USB Desktop Card Reader. Simply plug it into your computer, open a text editor like Notepad, and present the fob or card to display the 8-digit Wiegand number.
Q: Do I need the USB desktop reader to use your key fobs? A: No, it is not required for standard use with our readers. You would only need it if you are using the key fobs with our PC access control systems (AC8001/AC8002) or if you need to program several hundred fobs and want to speed up the process.
