Frequently Asked Questions
Are the fobs or cards numbered sequentially? No, they are not.
Can the fobs or cards be printed on?
- Fobs: No, they are too small for printing.
- Thick 1.8mm cards: Printing can be difficult due to their textured finish.
- Thin 0.8mm cards: Yes, these can be printed on.
What are the numbers printed on the fobs and cards? Each fob and card contains an EM chip pre-programmed with a unique hexadecimal number, which translates to an 18-digit number. This is typically represented as a 10-digit UID (Unique Identification) number and an 8-digit Wiegand code. Both numbers are printed on our proximity cards, while these fobs show the Wiegand code.
Are these numbers important? Yes, they are crucial. The number your system uses depends on the specific card reader:
- Some readers only use the 10-digit UID.
- Others, including many PC-based access control systems (like our AC8001 and AC8002), will only read or display the 8-digit Wiegand number.
- When manually deleting lost fobs, some systems may require the 8-digit Wiegand number instead of the 10-digit UID.
How can I easily find the 8-digit Wiegand number? Our Proximity USB Desktop Card Reader is the simplest solution. Just plug it into your computer, open a text editor like Notepad, and present a card or fob to display the 8-digit Wiegand number instantly.
Do I need a desktop reader for your key fob readers? Not usually. You would only need one if you are using these key fobs with our PC-based access control systems (AC8001 or AC8002) or if you have a large number of fobs to enroll, as it significantly speeds up the programming process.
